CAF Requirements
However, hosting the AFCON is no small feat. Countries need at least two stadiums and four training grounds to stage eight AFCON matches in 2027. Uganda, for instance, has proposed the Akii Bua Stadium and Hoima Stadium as new additions in its bid document. Kenya, on the other hand, offers options like Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, in addition to the Moi Sports Centre and Nyayo Stadium. Tanzania plans to upgrade the Chamazi Complex and the CCM Kirumba Stadium.
CAF has set stringent requirements for match venues, including proximity to an airport, a level five hospital, and a five-star hotel. Additionally, each host country must have at least three training grounds near the match venues that meet CAF standards. Stadia must install turnstiles at all gates and CCTV monitors to ensure security and efficiency.
Previous hosts, such as Cameroon, invested over US$800 million in stadium renovations, new constructions, and essential infrastructure like hotels, airports, and roads to ensure a successful continental competition.
